Daily vs Retail — why the result changes

A 24 × 18 × 12 in box is 5,184 in³. With UPS Daily Rates (divisor 139) that is 37.3 → 38 lb DIM weight. With Retail Rates (divisor 166) the same box is 31.2 → 32 lb. Retail rates use a larger divisor — smaller DIM weight — but carry higher base rates; the divisor difference does not mean retail is cheaper overall.

Relevant rules

UPS rounds every dimension UP to the next whole inch and DIM weight up to the next whole pound. Billable weight is the greater of actual and DIM weight. Additional Handling applies above 48 in longest side, 30 in second-longest side, 50 lb actual weight, or 10,368 in³ cubic size; Large Package applies above 96 in length or 130 in length + girth, with a 90-lb minimum billable weight. If your agreement specifies a different divisor, enter it under Advanced — it applies only to your calculation.

Worked example

24 × 18 × 12 in @ 8 lb: UPS Daily bills 38 lb; UPS Retail bills 32 lb. A 49-in longest side would trigger Additional Handling on either rate type — check your status in the diagnosis below.
